TRAI’s New Rule for DTH and Cable TV Subscribers to Group Channels Ends on 29 December 2018. Here we’ll know everything about it

The government has imposed a new policy on the cable and DTH industry in the country. According to the new rule, all bundle channel packaging systems will end on 29 December 2018. Each subscriber must only select those channels that they need. TRAI has asked all channel networks to set the price of each channel.

Most cable TV and DTH suppliers are currently following a channel-based subscription. But there is a charge for each cable and the DTH network. Before, they can increase or decrease depending on demand. But now this monopoly ends, and the rate is now unique to all networks.

According to TRAI, major networks like Star, Zee, Sony, Viacom 18, Sun Network have already announced the maximum retail price of each channel. Subscribers need to select their options channels from the list before 29 December and pay separately to each channel.

Whether the TRAI’s New Pricing Rule is worth for the user?

Yes, it is worth for the users. The new regulation of TRAI is really a good idea and it is in favour of the subscriber. They have implemented this system to reduce the number of unwanted channels in each user's package. Earlier each package contains different channels and each provider mixes packages with some random channels.
In most cases, subscribers will need to pay extra money in order to get the required channel, that obviously increases the package rate. Now this problem can be removed by a new rule. As a rule, each user has the option to choose the channels as they are required and must pay for that channels.

Whether New Pricing Rule Increase or Decrease the Channels Package Price?

Yes, depending on the choice of the channels, i.e., SD and HD, price for some users will increase but it will be cheaper for most of the users. If you don’t want to subscribe paid channels, then those users receive 100 "Free-to-Air" channels in a standard definition (SD), including Doordarshan, Star Bharat, and Zee Anmol. But these channels are not free, and they cost at least Rs 130, as service tax.
