You may have recently
heard about the name eSIM, and we can see how it is different from the usual
SIM cards we use on our devices. Here's everything you need to know about new
SIM technology to make it easy to change the network or switch between personal
and business numbers.
What Is e-SIM?
eSIM is an electronic SIM
card. As the name implies, the physical, plastic SIM card changed to an
embedded electronic equivalent component, and all current smartphones will come
with this virtual embedded parallel. (A related new embedded SIM technology, iSIM,
has recently been announced by ARM, but initially subject to a small Internet
of Things sensors and still not really relevant in the general customer space)
Benefits of Using eSIM
One of the advantages of an eSIM is that it is
small, the size of the nano-sim is just a small part. And they are only my
pinkie nail size. This is especially suited for ultra-compact gadgets, such as
watches that do not have room for common sim.
eSIM can not be removed
and soldered like other internal components. You do not have to remove it, and
there is no risk of compromising any water resistance in the gadget's shell.
Near Future of eSIM Technology
With iPhone XS and XS Max is
getting this feature, we all have a look at future phones that use eSIMs. GSMA is an organization
representing the interests of mobile operators around the globe, which has
announced a standard for this new type of SIM.
You can rewrite the
network data that has a standard SIM card on future eSIM devices, so you will need to change the operator to make a phone or two - when you arrange
to bring your phone number to the new network now.
